Ah well a few weeks ago I auditioned for a role in an upcoming BBC drama entitled 'Postcode'. The story deals with a 15 year old Somalian boy dealing with issues involving immigration, poverty and gang culture. This was the lead role and I fit the character description and so was invited to audition in rehearsal studios at Charring Cross, Craven Street by the casting director. The casting director, who is known for casting for Eastenders, the feature film Kick Ass and many other BBC programs, was very friendly and greeted me with a smile. There were many other auditionees there and I felt as if I had no chance what so ever. We were told to fill out a sheet with our personal details and acting experience and such. After that everybody was called into a studio room, which was quite obscure due to the large turn out of applicants. She told us why we were there and what she expected, we would be split into groups and she would evaluate us on a short improvisational performance. Before we began she asked if there was anyone of Somali ethnicity in the room and as would be expected I raised my hand nervously. She leaped up and exclaimed thank god and I grinned with the thought of having an advantage over the other applicants. We were then split into groups and conversed before creating our improvisational piece which was a scene in which I played the character I was auditioning for. It went well and we received a round of applause. After that she read the names of the people she wanted to stay in the room, the others could leave. To be continued...
